Headlight mounting dress up bolt DIY using M6 bolts instead of screws

Engine Dress M6 bolts for headlight screws

Adding M6 bolts for headlights

In this article I’ll show you how I swapped out the old headlight phillips screws with 10mm M6 flanged bolts so that I could have all matching “dress up bolt” hardware.

First, refer this article to see how I started converting all the NRG diverter panel hardware to 10mm M6 bolts.

Next if you’re wondering why I went with 10mm M6, it’s because the fender bolts are 10mm M6, so it was important for me to just keep this consistent throughout the engine bay.

Materials needed

M6 bolts, 10mm bolt head, you can use 12mm length or 16mm length
M6 washers, I used 18mm OD and 20mm OD. This is for the underside of the bracket
M6 nylon washers 20mm, I used these as a spacer between the metal bracket and the headlight mounting tab

Instructions

OK, here’s the old look of the headlight screws, you’ll see here they might even be prone to rusting:

First step is to remove your headlights, you can do this without pulling the bumper fully off, you’ll have to finagle the headlight while pulling the bumper cover back a tad.
Next, remove the plastic tabs. With the headlight off you’ll be able to look underneath the supports and see how they’re fastened in, just pinch the sides with pliers from underneath and they’ll pop out. There will be a square cutout for them both:

For the INSIDE mounting point, you will use a washer drilled out to 3/8″ (or 9mm) ID to accommodate the rivet nut. Here’s the riv nut test fit inside the washer

Here’s a video of the install, noticed I put the washer on the underside, then rivet it down.

Use a nylon lock nut for the outside bolt

You don’t want to fuse together the fender and the headlight support bracket. If you have to service the fender, you want this to be removable. So, for the outside bolt just use a washer on the back side, and a nylon locking nut to retain it. You’ll just have to remember that if you ever need to remove your headlights.

Here’s what that looks like:
