Here’s a quick look at the the results of painting my exhaust heat shield with Seymour Hot Spot high temp paint:
I’ve seen other paint jobs on exhaust shields. My opinion:
- Matte or Semi gloss – Just the right amount of sheen
- Flat paint looks too dry
- Gloss paint is too shiny
The Seymour Cast Iron Gray came out just right. We’ll see how long it holds up.

Prep and Paint Instructions
- Wire brush or sand the surface to remove corrosion
- Steel wool sanding, brings the surface to a nice smooth finish
- Isopropyl alcohol or acetone wipe down
- You can use high temp primer. I didn’t, I went straight on to the metal
- Spray light first coat. Then 2-3 follow up coats for full coverage.
- Allow about 2 hours to cure before handling
- I finished off the top 4 bolts with four Titanium M8-1.25 x 17mm length flanged head bolts and zinc washers
