What SSTs are (and why they matter)
Special Service Tools (SSTs) are tooling specifically engineered by Toyota to handle jobs that typical hand tools can’t do reliably (specific fitment, size, clearance etc). They’re referenced throughout Toyota factory service manuals (FSMs) by part number, so techs know exactly which to use for a given procedure. These Genuine Toyota tools are expensive and don’t warrant the price tag for occasional or one-time use.
I compiled a list of affordable SSTs and universal tools for your Scion tC maintenance and upgrade projects. These are all Amazon links for generic branded tools that work fine for the DIY enthusiast. Maybe not so much for a full time mechanic. Some you may find very useful. Some you may never use. Some you may not know existed.
Special Service Tools
Toyota crank pulley holder – This holds the crank pulley in place while you torque down the crank bolt to spec. I own this tool and used it for my NST Lightweight Pulley set installation

Toyota CV boot clamp tool OE Spec – Most Scion owners will replace their CV Axle outright. But in the event you want to change just the boot, there is a special tool that will tightendown the metal clamp to OE spec

Toyota fuel injector seal installer – Most people will just replace or purchase refurbished injectors. In case you only want to replace a leaky seal, this is the right tool size for your OEM Denso injectors.

Scion/Toyota clutch alignment tool – A simple tool used during a manual transmission clutch install to line everything up before you bolt the transmission back on. It holds the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel dead center while you torque the pressure plate down.

Universal Service Tools
O2 Sensor removal tools – Used to remove the upstream and downstream O2 sensors. More of a universal tool, nothing specific to Scion, but inexpensive and handy to have in the toolbox. I own several variations of sensor removal tools and used them when replacing my catalytic converter.

Cam pulley holder – This tool holds the pulley wheel while you tighten the bolts. Works for the water pump pulley. I own this tool and used it for my NST Lightweight Pulley set installation

Universal inner Tie Rod removal kit You can rent this from your local parts store, or they make universal kits for as little as $50. This is used to remove the inside nut for your Inner tie rod attached to the rack and pinion.
