Benefits of carrying a full size spare rim and tire

OEM split spoke full size spare fits in trunk with minor trimming 225 45 17

The 2005-2010 Scion tC trunk will fit a full size spare

In case you’re wondering the Scion tC will fit a full size spare tire in the back.  The trunk cover won’t be level, but it’s a minor inconvenience.  Shown above, I’m even running an oversized 225/45/17 tire on the OEM split spoke alloy. It’s worth noting you’ll have to trim some of the hatch molding to make it fit.

You can often find a single rim in the used marketplace for cheap. Or you can buy a new one if you’re fancy like that.

Why Running a Full-Size Spare Tire Is Worth It

Most cars come from the factory with a temporary “donut” spare designed only to get you off the road. While it saves weight and space, upgrading to a full-size spare tire offers real-world benefits that make it a smart choice—especially for daily drivers and road trips.

1. Safer and more predictable driving

A full-size spare matches your normal tire’s diameter and grip, so the car behaves as expected. Temporary spares often have reduced traction and strict speed limits, which can compromise braking, stability, and confidence—particularly in rain or on the highway.

2. No speed or distance limitations

Donut spares usually limit you to ~50 mph and short distances. A full-size spare lets you drive normally without rushing to a tire shop or worrying about damaging the drivetrain on longer trips.

3. Protects your drivetrain and electronics

Mismatched tire sizes can stress differentials, AWD systems, traction control, and ABS. A full-size spare keeps rolling diameter consistent, reducing the risk of mechanical or electronic issues.

4. Greater versatility in emergencies

With a full-size spare, you can:

  • Finish a long drive

  • Tow a light load

  • Navigate rough roads
—all things a temporary spare isn’t designed to handle.

5. Long-term value and peace of mind

While a full-size spare takes up more space and adds weight, it can save time, towing costs, and potential repairs. For enthusiasts, commuters, or anyone who travels often, the peace of mind alone is worth it.

Bottom line:
If you have the space, a full-size spare turns a breakdown into a minor inconvenience instead of a stressful, time-limited problem. It’s one of the most practical upgrades you can make that only matters when you really need it—and that’s exactly the point.
