There’s a misconception that all 1st Gen Scion TCs burn excessive oil. The reality is, Toyota only issued a recall for certain models of the 2007-2010 Scion TC due to excessive oil consumption. Generally speaking, owners of 2005-2006 Scion TCs will still burn oil due to the high mileage and may vary depending on the level of maintenance (routine oil changes) they have performed.

The primary cause of the oil consumption was a change in the design of the piston rings. Thus, you may find that owners of 2005-2006 Scion TCs have generally been able to avoid excessive oil consumption, but according to Toyota, the best way to know would be to verify by VIN number. Check with your local Toyota Service center.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: If you are looking for a used 1st Gen Scion TC, try to find a “low mileage” 2005-2006 OR any 2007-2010 Scion TC where you can verify the Warranty Repair work has been performed by a Toyota Service Center. Good luck!
