Back in January 2023 my OEM suspension had over 219,000 original miles on them. The original shocks were blown and I was sick of my stock ride height. Ordering a new complete aftermarket set of shocks and struts from Amazon was an option. However, I decided to replace them with coilovers as part of basic maintenance.

I wont get into EVERY detail of suspension installation. There’s plenty of YouTube videos on that. You’ll need 14mm deep socket for the top mount, and 22mm socket for the strut bolts at the knuckle. You’ll also have to disconnect the brake line bracket and swaybar end link. Rather, I’ll share a few tips and findings from the install.

Important info

Racelands are spring perch height adjustable, NOT shock tube height adjustableAdjusting the ride height from your spring perch will affect pre-load.

Nobody ever talks about this and the downside! In order to raise or lower the car I have to move the spring perch collars up or down. This affects preload, and thus makes your car stiffer or softer solely on the basis of how high or low your perch is – NO BUENO! You want “normal” preload of the spring/strut by virtue of having the spring perch at the manufacturer’s recommended preload setting. This allows the spring to articulate normally and the strut dampening to happen as designed. The solution is ride height adjustability via the shock tube such as that found on BC Racing BR Series coilovers. If I had realized this, I would have considered Rev9 (bare minimum), Teins, Megans, or BCs – in that order.

REARS

For the rears you have to remove the trunk interior to get to the three 14mm bolts that hold the rear strut. The Raceland Classics re-use your factory top hats. Yet another advantage for the more expensive coilovers, they come with their own rear top hats. Here’s how I got the top hat off the rears without a spring compressor.

BLOWN STRUT AFTER 18 MONTHS

After 18 months on Raceland Classics I discovered a blown upper strut.  Rather than warranty them I sold them in the Marketplace and decided to upgrade BC Racing coilovers.
